Hemp Textiles vs. Cotton: The Battle for Eco-Friendly Fashion
Hemp and cotton are both natural fibres, both used widely in clothing, and both have real strengths. The choice between them is rarely as simple as one being good and the other bad — and at The House of Hemp we use both.
What each fibre does well
Hemp fibre is strong and long-lasting. It breathes well, softens with every wash rather than wearing thin, and holds its shape. Cotton is soft from the first wear, breathable, easy to wash, and familiar — which is why it has stayed the default for so long.
Why we blend rather than choose
Hemp on its own can feel structured. Cotton on its own doesn't last as long. Blended, you get the drape and softness of cotton with the strength and longevity of hemp. We also work with TENCEL™ Lyocell where a garment needs more fluidity.
The organic cotton we use is grown without synthetic pesticides. That matters — the environmental case against cotton is largely a case against conventional cotton farming, not against the fibre itself.
The water question, honestly
Hemp does need less water to grow than cotton, and it grows densely enough to suppress weeds without herbicides. But you will find wildly varying figures quoted online about cotton's water and pesticide footprint, and many of them trace back to studies from the 1990s that have since been revised downward. We would rather state the direction of the difference than quote a number we can't stand behind.
Durability
Hemp fibre is stronger than cotton and resists stretching, so hemp-blend garments keep their shape through repeated washing. In practical terms this is the point that matters most: a garment you wear for five years has a smaller footprint than one you replace every season, whatever it's made from.
How hemp fabric is made
Hemp fibre is separated from the stalk through retting — either mechanically or by soaking. The fibre is then spun into yarn and woven or knitted into cloth.
Cost
Hemp costs more than cotton upfront. The supply chain is smaller and the processing more labour-intensive. Over the life of the garment, that gap narrows considerably.
