Is Hemp Breathable? What a Kolkata Summer Day Actually Does to It
Yes. And we would say that about any fabric we sold, so here is the specific version instead: what happens to a hemp shirt across one full day in Kolkata, from morning out to evening back.
If you want a stress test for a summer fabric, Kolkata in June is a fair one. High heat, high humidity, and no relief until well after dark.
Across one day
The first thing you notice is that it doesn't cling. Most fabrics start sitting against the skin once you have been out for an hour — hemp doesn't, because its porous structure lets air move through rather than trapping it against you.
The second thing is odour, and customers raise it before we do. The consistent report we get is that a hemp shirt worn through a full humid day doesn't smell at the end of it. We are telling you what customers say rather than making a claim about the fibre, because that is the honest basis we have.
By evening, the garment is still doing what it did at nine in the morning. That is the whole point. You are not managing it through the day.
Drying: shade, and how long it takes
We recommend shade drying, always. Direct sun fades colour on any natural fibre, and hemp gains nothing from it.
In summer, a hemp shirt dries on a line in the shade in about two to three hours.
In monsoon it takes considerably longer, and that is simply the weather. But hemp has a useful quirk here: you can iron it while it is still slightly damp. In fact it irons better damp — the moisture relaxes the fibres and the creases fall out in seconds. So a shirt that hasn't fully dried is still wearable or foldable after a press.
Does it behave differently in dry heat versus humid heat?
In our experience, no. The same porous structure that releases humidity in Kolkata is what moves warm air away in dry heat. It is one property doing the same job in two conditions.

Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai — the feedback does not vary by city. What people say is that it is breathable and light on the body, and that they don't feel hot in it.
The same holds internationally. Our Gulf customers deal with sustained heat, and the report is the same. Many of them already know hemp and order it specifically for that reason.
Our own view, and it is a view rather than a measurement: if a fabric holds up through a Kolkata monsoon, it will hold up anywhere.
What this means if you're buying
Hemp suits humid climates because of how it is built, not because of a treatment applied to it. There is no finish to wash out.
