Is Hemp Clothing Comfortable, or Is It Scratchy?
No, it isn't scratchy. But that answer is too simple, and it skips the part that actually matters — so here is the longer version, including the one time a customer sent a piece back because of how it felt.
What people say when they touch it for the first time
The reaction is consistent enough that we can predict it. People say it's soft. Then, almost immediately, they say something about breathability — they can tell just from handling it that air moves through it.
That surprises people who arrive expecting something closer to jute or raw canvas. The reputation hemp carries is decades out of date; it comes from an era when the fibre wasn't processed the way it is now.
It gets softer, and it happens fast
Most natural fibres soften over time. Hemp does it quickly — by the first or second wash, a piece has reached close to its final hand-feel.
This matters if you're ordering online and worried about a break-in period. There isn't much of one. What you feel after two washes is roughly what you'll feel in year three, except by then it will have softened a little further without losing strength.
The honest part: not all hemp feels the same
This is where most brand answers stop, and it's where the real answer starts.
We work with two blends, and they feel genuinely different:
● Hemp-Tencel is soft, fluid and flowy. It drapes. We use it for tops, shirts and dresses, where movement matters more than structure.
● Hemp-cotton is stiffer and more structured. It holds a shape. We use it for pants, where you want the garment to keep its line rather than cling.
Neither is better. They do different jobs. But if you order a hemp-cotton piece expecting hemp-Tencel softness, you will notice the difference.
The one return we've had over feel
Since 2021, nobody has told us a THOH piece felt rough.
We have had one return over how a garment felt. A customer found the hemp-cotton stiffer than expected. He wasn't wrong — it is stiffer, by design. He exchanged it for a hemp-Tencel piece and kept that one.
We're including this because it is the most useful thing we can tell you. The risk with hemp isn't scratchiness. It's ordering the structured blend when you wanted the fluid one.
We don't soften anything ourselves
Some brands apply chemical softeners to natural fibres to make them feel better in a shop. We don't do anything to the fabric at our end.
Our hemp-Tencel and hemp-cotton arrive from the mill already finished. What you feel is the fibre and the weave, not a coating that washes out after a month.
What to do if you're still unsure
We don't send swatches, and we'll be straight about that being a gap in how we sell — for an unfamiliar fabric, being able to touch it first would genuinely help.
What we do instead is answer honestly on WhatsApp before you order. Tell us what you're planning to wear the piece for and how you like clothes to feel, and we'll tell you which blend suits you. If we think hemp-cotton will feel stiffer than you want, we'll say so rather than take the order.
So, is hemp comfortable?
Yes — breathable, soft after a wash or two, and light enough that most customers tell us they forget they're wearing it. The scratchy reputation belongs to hemp from another era.
